Born in Bath, England, Simon Platt initiated his experience in organ building in 1963 with the firm of Henry Willis in London, having previously won a grant to visit and study historical instruments in Holland and Germany.

He studied Architecture and Fine Art at Cambridge University, graduating with honours in 1969, and since then has undertaken a wide variety of architectural projects in different countries in Europe, America, the Middle East and the Far East. Among his first buildings the design of the new concert hall in Victoria University, Canada (1974- 1976) is significant for his first organ case design and opportunity to create a synthesis of his dedication to both music and architecture.

In parallel with his professional activities he has investigated the organ in hispanic countries for many years, an interest inspired when resident in Peru (1969-1972) and in Mexico (1974) and broadened since his establishment in Barcelona (1986) as a member of the Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura. Today he has his own architecture and design studio  in Barcelona and has collaborated with the master organ builder Gerhard Grenzing since 1987, designing organ cases of a marked architectural quality.

In 1991 his first work in Spain was inaugurated, the large Grenzing organ in the Auditorio Nacional  concert hall in Madrid, followed by the instrument in the church of the Hospital de Venerables in Seville, with a case designed and brought to reality in pure Seville baroque style. Other designs of his include organs of every size completed by Grenzing in Spain and all over the world, including the Paris Conservatoire Superieure instrument (1996) and the monumental instruments in the Niigata concert hall in Japan (1998), Almudena Cathedral in Madrid (1999). The new 63 stop organ suspended from the triforium in Brussels Cathedral has just been completed and will be inaugurated officially in September 2000.

He has published various studies related to organs and participated in courses on the iberian organ in Torredembarra and Montblanc(1987), and Daroca (1989). He also attended the ISO congress in Cambridge in 1996 representing the Gerhard Grenzing firm.

He has directed projects for the restoration and reconstruction of organ cases and organ lofts for historical instruments, amongst which those undertaken by Grenzing in Tuy cathedral and in the basilica of Sta. Maria del Mar in Barcelona are outstanding.

In the next few years, among other significant works, the second phase of the new organ for Sta. Maria del Pino in Barcelona, and a new instrument in the Temple des Eaux Vives in Geneva are in progress.
